A Royal Marriage: Prince Albert’s Love Letters & Quotes From Queen Victoria

Prince Albert wrote the sweetest words to his future wife in October of 1839 upon his engagement to Queen Victoria. He said “How is it that I have deserved so much love, so much affection? I cannot get used to the reality of all that I see and hear, and have to believe that Heaven has sent me an angel whose brightness shall illumine my life,”

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were married for twenty-one years following their wedding on February 10th, 1840 at St James’s Palace chapel. The couple went on to have nine children and were know to be a golden couple yet the pair did face some struggles. There were many turbulent times and obstacles they had to deal with as a couple. Queen Victoria was so devastated over his death in 1861 that she wore black mourning dresses for the remainder of her life. In today’s post I will be sharing a very sweet love letter written by Prince Albert to the queen while he went back home to Coburg, Germany preparing for his move to England and marriage. I will also share some of the best and romantic statements made by Queen Victoria about Prince Albert.

The following is a letter written by Prince Albert: 

Dearest deeply loved Victoria.

According to your wish, and by the urging of my heart to talk to you and open my heart to you, I send these lines. We arrived safely at Calais, and Lord Alfred [Paget] is to re-cross in a ¼ of an hour, and will arrive at Windsor early tomorrow. The state of the tide and strong wind forced us to start at 2.30 in the morning, and we reached here at about 6 o’clock. Even then the Firebrand could not approach the quay, so that we decided to go ashore in a smaller boat. We both, Schenk, and all the servants were fearfully ill; I have hardly recovered yet.

I need not tell you that since we left, all my thoughts have been with you at Windsor, and that your image fills my whole soul. Even in my dreams I never imagined that I should find so much love on earth. How that moment shines for me still when I was close to you, with your hand in mine. Those days flew by so quickly, but our separation will fly equally so.

If I must live on (and I will do nothing to make me worse than I am), it is henceforth for our poor fatherless children – for my unhappy country, which has lost all in losing him – and in only doing what I know and feel he would wish.”

Above all, the morality and style of living were transformed. Gone were the days of the raffish, improvident Hanoverian kings whose behavior tended to be emulated by the people. For twenty-one years of Victoria’s reign she was married to a German prince who was as determined “to be good” as the queen. Prince Albert was as responsible for the nation’s renaissance as the monarch herself. He might have been the butt of the aristocracy, but that in no way diminished his influence. Victoria and Albert had nine children and became the archetype of the nineteenth-century family. But the outside world knew nothing of the passionate and turbulent relationship between the queen and her prince consort. Thunderous rows grew from the most trivial origins and threatened to tear the two apart, but always the sun of reconciliation and love broke through.
