Murder Monday | Poem The Murdered Traveller by William Cullen Bryant

August has finally arrived with this month’s Murder Monday post! Today I am sharing a very interesting poem titled The Murdered Traveller written by William Cullen Bryant. This poem and others by Bryant are available through one of my favorite free resources called The Project Gutenberg.

Before getting into the poem, I think it is important to take a moment and praise Project Gutenberg. It is a massive free library with of over 60,000 free eBooks and audible files. These are mostly writing from the public domain, and typically where I get all my classical literature reading from.

Project Gutenberg and their sister site Librivox is the reason that I have been able to read many amazing pieces of literature in both in eBook and audible formats. They have books such as Anne Of Green Gables, Little Women, Anna Karenina, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Complete works of Jane Austen, and so much more that I know readers would love!

THE MURDERED TRAVELLER.

by William Cullen Bryant

When spring, to woods and wastes around,
Brought bloom and joy again,
The murdered traveller’s bones were found,
Far down a narrow glen.

The fragrant birch, above him, hung
Her tassels in the sky;
And many a vernal blossom sprung,
And nodded careless by.

The red-bird warbled, as he wrought
His hanging nest o’erhead,
And fearless, near the fatal spot,
Her young the partridge led.

But there was weeping far away,
And gentle eyes, for him,
With watching many an anxious day,
Were sorrowful and dim.

They little knew, who loved him so
The fearful death he met,
When shouting o’er the desert snow,
Unarmed, and hard beset;—

Nor how, when round the frosty pole
The northern dawn was red,
The mountain wolf and wild-cat stole
To banquet on the dead;—

Nor how, when strangers found his bones,
They dressed the hasty bier,
And marked his grave with nameless stones,
Unmoistened by a tear.

But long they looked, and feared, and wept,
Within his distant home;
And dreamed, and started as they slept,
For joy that he was come.

Long, long they looked—but never spied
His welcome step again,
Nor knew the fearful death he died
Far down that narrow glen.

BOOK PICK OF THE DAY

One small town’s dark secrets lay hidden in the hollows…

Rumors have swirled around Jake Cashen his whole life. Is he crazy like his father? Is it true they booted him out of the F.B.I. right after he cracked a career-making RICO case? Was he dirty? Only Jake knows and he’s not telling. He came back to his tiny hometown at the foot of Ohio’s Blackhand Hills to serve as a deputy sheriff. He hopes to punch a clock and keep his head down until retirement. It was a solid plan. Until someone put a bullet in the head of a revered county judge. Jake’s new boss knows Jake has a particular set of skills. The Sheriff pins a detective badge on him whether Jake likes it or not. He could have said no. But as Jake watches the locals nearly bungle the case in the first five minutes, he knows he’s all in.

As Jake digs into the murder, he soon learns Judge Rand had enemies in every corner. And someone hiding in plain sight may be plotting to bring his investigation to a deadly end. To bring a cold-blooded killer to justice, Jake’s forced to confront every truth he’s tried to escape. Even the ones that could bury him. Murder in the Hollows is the gripping first book in the Detective Jake Cashen thriller series. A former police detective, author Declan James brings you authentic crime fiction that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Perfect for fans of Connelly, Box, Dugoni and Baldacci.
