The Book Life | Five Hilarious Book Struggles Readers Know All Too Well
Happy Saturday everyone! I decided to get a little bit silly for a fun quick post that everyone can enjoy! Here are five hilarious struggles that many readers have experienced in one way or another. These are all moments that true book lovers can relate with and appreciate them for what they are.
These are all meant to be light and funny commentary for readers to chuckle at. I hope everyone has been having a good week and are enjoying a relaxing weekend. #1 WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE SOCIALIZING
There comes a time in every reader’s life that they find themselves declining social invitations because they would prefer a night alone at home to read a new exciting book that has been taking forever to be released!
“Hey Sally, Do you want to come out tonight?”
“No, I cant. My cat is sick, I am sick, we are all sick…. *Cough* *Cough*”
#2 WHEN A BOOK IS RETURNED DAMAGED OR NOT AT ALL.
This is an age old problem! When our friends do not respect the property we lend out to them. In the case of a reader, the book is returned with pages folded or mangled. It is returned in less than perfect condition. This is almost just as bad as not returning the book at all! Every reader has been here a time or two if they have the habit of lending out their books. Let us all have a moment of sympathy for our ruined books.
#3 WHEN YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH A FICTIONAL CHARACTER
Books play on the passion, emotion, and feelings of readers; therefore, it is inevitable to fall in love with a fictional character. This can happen quite often! Who has not been guilty of falling in love with characters in the books they most enjoyed? There is some heart wrenching perfection in literature. I am definitely guilty!
#4 WHEN THEY HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE BUT NOT READ THE BOOK
The most frustrating part of this scenario is the movie watcher usually acts like they know everything about the plot and characters. This comes across as arrogant when they have not even bothered to read the literature. Please read the book before acting like you posses more knowledge of it than the person who has read the movie’s book. They know more in most cases! Books dive deeper than movies are able to accomplish. This is just fact.
#5 CAN’T DECIDE WHICH BOOK TO BUY IN THE BOOK STORE
When a reader is shopping through a book store and just cannot decide which books they want. This can turn into hours! It is so difficult deciding which books to pick. The readers starts out in their favorite genre’s section and just are stumped. Admit it. You have been there before!
BOOK PICK OF THE DAY
Against a backdrop of murder and intrigue at court of King Charles II, can Susannah and Raphael save their friend and find each other along the way? I completely agree with all of these struggles! It’s especially frustrating when someone hasn’t read the book but pretends they know everything about it. And the indecision in a bookstore is always a struggle for me too – there are just too many good options to choose from!

I once lent a book out that was returned to me with extensive underlining . . . in ink. At least the guilty party gave me a nice fancy bookmark as unspoken compensation.
Oh my. I could never write on another person’s book without their permission and would never ask to. I’m glad you took in stride. That was so rude of them!
I have fallen in love with characters so many times.
If only I could click my heels three times and wish for them to materialize in front of me!

When it comes to lending books, I found myself buying a duplicate copy of ones I treasured, just so I wouldn’t have to worry about losing the one in circulation — I kept the other on my “private” shelf, up in my studio. These days, as I’m downsizing, I’m more likely to give a book away rather than lend it.
Your bookstore selection dilemma brings up the question of just how do we decide what we’re taking. I’ve found that opening a book randomly and reading a sentence or two can be illuminating. Can the author write? Does the prose crackle or fall flat? Do I see anything new there? So what other strategies do smart readers employ?

I enjoyed your post and can certainly relate to a number of the points you raised. The big one for me is when I loan a pristine copy of a book to someone and the first thing they do is to bend the front cover back so hard it cracks the spine. The expression on my face doesn’t need words.
