Supernatural Historical Fiction: A Medium’s Peril Book Series Review Deep Dive!
I had such an absolute blast embarking on a journey that weaves the supernatural with the gripping mystery and suspense. Teagan Rรญordรกin Genevieneโs โA Mediumโs Perilโ series of novel’s proved to be an unforgettable adventure for me as a reader. In today’s post, I plan on sharing my book review of both A Peril in Ectoplasm and its lovely sequel called A Peril in the Bayou. Each one of these books caught my attention from the start with all their mysterious intrigue, the well-crafted characters, and endless chilling phenomenas.
Genevieneโs storytelling and writing skills made each page a joy to read with a fast paced narrative and easy to follow plotline. The series is definitley a quick and snappy read that kept me engrossed at every line. My favorite was the courageous Daphne Moultrieโs and her struggles against evil and the dedicated intellegence Clover Flanaganโs whose journey through the mystic depths of the bayou was quite memorable. These books offer the perfect shades of historical fiction, mystery, and supernatural.
All in all, this was one of most eerie and enchanting tales of the year. Every single detail matters, and every character leaves a lasting impression for the readers. If youโre a fan of immersive historical settings, strong character dynamics, endearing friendships, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, this series is one you wonโt want to miss. I highly reccomend giving this series a chance!

A Peril in Ectoplasm: Just Once More (A Medium’s Peril Book 1)
I was quite surprised by this book’s ability to transport me right into the brightly vibrant and darkly mysterious world of the 1920s. I had no first impressions or expectations when I began reading and yet it was somehow one of my favorite series from this past winter season …I know it took me forever to post this review… moving on! (I am sorry for the long delay!). The novel plunges readers into an era that introduces them to Daphne Moultrie, a well-known and powerful medium grappling with the terrifying fear of a dire warning sent from the beyond. The only clue to save her life is the visions flashing before her eyes and a message that can’t be ignored.
This sets the stage for a story brimming to the top with intrigue and fast-paced suspense that takes readers on a thrilling journey. Geneviene hooks readers with vivid descriptions and authenticity that masterfully adds fresh life into every scene I read, merging the jazz and glamour with the eerie allure of sรฉances and supernatural phenomenas lurking around every corner. The atmosphere she creates is both mesmerizing and immersive. I know a lot of research was put into making the novel’s setting believable and enriching. Every small detail sucked me right into the story. Everything is connected and matters in some way or another. I loved it!
Daphne turns out to be quite the compelling yet very relatable protagonist, her strengths and vulnerabilities are incredibly palpable throughout the narrative. The strong soul hidden behind her meek personality is inspiring as readers watch her determination to destroy what threatens everything she loves unfold. Daphne somehow finds her power lurking just under the surface. Her struggle against the unexpected malevolent forces, which is exacerbated by her fiancรฉ’s insistence on conducting perilous sรฉances endlessly, keeps readers on edge and guessing. Each session leaves Daphne increasingly frail, heightening the tension and suspense.
The best part of the story in my opinion was the diverse group of people at Daphne’s side. They all added layers of depth and complexity while also winning your heart. They are absolutely lovely! Among them is a character you’ll undoubtedly love to hate, enhancing the storyโs dynamic and making it even more engaging. I fully think this novel wouldn’t have been the same without all of Daphne’s loved ones. They truly give this mystery a very heartwarming and wholesome feel in a perfect contrast to the more sinister plot. Sometimes family isn’t always blood but the ones you chose to have at your side.
This novel offers readers a very thrilling and evocative experience for fans of historical fiction, mystery, and the supernatural alike that did not leave me dissapointed. Geneviene crafts a believable and enthralling world with a suspenseful, multi-faceted plot. Daphne Moultrie’s journey will linger long after the final page. Dive into this bookโyou wonโt regret it. I wanted more!
SYNOPSIS:
In 1920s Florida, Spiritualism enjoys renewed interest. Daphne Moultrie, the most powerful medium of her time, receives a warning from the other side, โFind her, and keep her with you. Or you will die.โ All Daphne knows about this girl is what her crystal ball showed her โ a four-leaf clover, and each leaf had a human eye. Meanwhile, Daphneโs fiancรฉ has designs of his own.
pressures her to continue sรฉances for a strange and very demanding woman. With each of those sรฉances, Daphne becomes weaker and closer to death. This novella captures the Roaring Twenties, as only acclaimed author, Teagan Rรญordรกin Geneviene can. Settings, descriptions, and language all come to vibrant life. The ensemble cast has a number of characters, including one you will love to hate. Itโs a genre mash-up, part mystery, part suspense, with a dash of light horror.

A Peril in the Bayou (A Medium’s Peril Book 2)
I was absolutely thrilled to have the pleasure of diving back into the world that Teagan Rรญordรกin Geneviene has so masterfully crafted in her second book “A Peril in the Bayou.” Once again, I found myself completely transported, this time to the atmospheric New Orleans bayou during the roaring 1920s. Starting the novel, I had very high hopes and expectations after enjoying first book so much, I was thankfully not disappointedโGeneviene delivered a spellbinding sequel that kept me hooked from start to the finish.
The story had a little more focus on other characters this time around, such as Clover Flanagan, the extremely smart and dedicated assistant to Daphne Moultrie, an aspect I really enjoyed. Clover’s loyalty to Daphne shows such a wonderful friendship. Their journey to New Orleans sets off the stage for an adventure steeped in mystery and supernatural intrigue. Daphne’s challenge to navigate the haunted bayou of New Orleans to understand the spirits was both fascinating and chilling. The rich descriptions of the bayouโs eerie beauty were so vivid, I could almost feel the oppressive humidity and hear the whispers speaking out in the night.
One of the main parts that made this novel stand out brilliantly is how Geneviene brings New Orleans and its surrounding bayou to life. The very clever blend of jazz music, mysticism, and the dark allure of Voodoo which all come to together to make an intoxicating atmosphere that simply enthralled me as a reader. Every detail, from the bustling hectic streets to the quiet shadowy depths of the bayou, was meticulously crafted, giving readers a true sense of immersion and authenticity that I loved so much from the first book.
Ms. Flanagan shines through as another compelling hero in her own right. Watching Clover’s talented and unexpected gifts strengthen amid the bayouโs primeval forces is a very gripping element of the story for readers. Her courage and growth pleasantly mirror Daphneโs journey in the first book, adding a whole new fresh depth to each character. The strong dynamic and loyal bonds between Clover and Daphne is solidified by their shared experiences and mutual support, making their friendship both believable and loving.
The return of my favorite characters such as Albert, Phineas, and Maisy was a delightful must-have in order for this sequel to be a success. Each of them is such a kind-hearted soul that readers can’t help but love, and this only continues to grow as you work your way through the second book. The series wouldn’t be the same without them being together. A true family whose presence adds continuity and familiarity to the story. Each character plays a crucial role, contributing to the rich tapestry of the plot. Their interactions provide moments of levity and humor with deep seated warmth making truly the perfect counterbalance to the storyโs darker aspects.
I think it is important to acknowledge and discuss how the book stays new and exciting by introducing readers to new formidable foes and mystical entities that all make for a fun journey. The tension between Mother Leafy and her dangerous rival adds to the thrills and suspense. The cryptic warnings and the presence of Voodoo gods demanding sacrifice kept me as a reader on edge, eager to turn pages to see what would happen next. This honestly is probably the most important thing any author writing a sequel can do. As a reader, I want each book in a series to bring new elements while also staying true to the characters that are loved.

I agree. The author has a special talent bringing together true settings, historical events and inventions, and fictional characters, without ever letting her research get in the way of the story. And her imagination knows no bounds. A fantastic series. I hope there will be more to come!
I hope so too! I definitley plan on checking out some of the other work she has done. What a gem of an author to have found right!? You are the one I believe who actually put my eyes on her. She was so kind to have sent me the books and those amazing images! She isn’t just a talented author, but a great graphics genius and blogger too!
I blush! ^^’ Thank you, Samantha. “Dead of Winter” is the only thing with a similar vibe to A Medium’s Peril, although it’s a reading commitment. The latest to be published is The Delta Pearl duology. While it’s steampunk, it might appeal to your “inner pirate”. (I don’t know why I say that, because it has nothing to do with pirates… just a feeling I guess.)
We only speaking the truth!
You are so kind, Olga. Heartfelt thanks for all of your encouragement and support. Hugs.

haha Yes!
Welcome back to the blogosphere, Samantha! I can’t imagine anyone saying anything better about these stories. Everything you pointed out was what I hoped the reader would absorb. “Every single detail matters, and every character leaves a lasting impression for the readers.” I always strive to do that with details, although, I’m never sure if readers pick up on it, so I appreciate that feedback. I’m beyond happy that you enjoyed this series. Big hugs.
I am so pleased that you liked the review I gave! They were truly very fun to read!
oh this looks like a good read! ๐
Hi, Meg. Thanks for commenting. I’m delighted with Sam an that’s reviews. This fall I’m hoping to do a third book in the series, set in the Garden District, before the characters continue their travel back to Florida, or perhaps elsewhere. Hugs.

I love you guys so much and the this wonderful community!
Gotta look into this ๐
They’re fairly quick reads. I call it “light horror”… but leaving the lights on might be a good idea. ๐
